Dock Magnification has its uses. Personally, I like to use it to see the number of new messages in Mail ... or to see a larger thumbnail of a minimized window. The problem is, I generally don't like to turn dock magnification on for the same reason that a lot of other people don't ... it just makes everything a moving target.

So I just had a thought. What if there was a keyboard shortcut to manually invoke dock magnification over the area of the dock under the mouse cursor. Perhaps it could be on a timer and automatically go away after 3-5 seconds. It seems that this would be a "middle ground" between the all-or-nothing options we have now.

In the mean time, you might want try Full Keyboard Access in the the Keyboard panel in System Preferences.

Working with the keyboard is faster.
You can launch items from the keyboard.

If you have magnification on it will magnify your highlighted items as you use the arrow keys. You can also use icon menus in the dock with the arrow keys.
