I've looked through the posts on Java 1.4.1 on this forum and can't say that I followed them (treat me as a novice, although I have some knowledge of UNIX and other OSs - Mac user since 1985..., please )

I am running a PBTi 550 with Mac OS X 10.2.4. I downloaded and installed December 2002 Developer Tools and installed the Java 1.4.1 update.

I'm also trying to install a piece of linguistic software called Gate which requires JavaVM 1.4 or better.

My machine keeps using JavaVM 1.3.1 instead

How do I force Mac OS X to use JavaVM 1.4.1?

Is there any documentation (prefer simple instructions) that explains JavaVM PlugIn settings and the like?

Depends... Is it a GUI app or console app? Console apps will usually use 1.4 and GUI (packaged) apps will use 1.3 unless you add the XML file that specifies 1.4.

Apple's Java Dev site has a FAQ that contains all of this info.
