i posted this in the ibook forum a but i think it is more of an OSX issue. anyways, i have a refurbished 700mhz ibook with a toshiba combo drive running OSX 10.2, that was purchased direct from apple.
here's the problem,
if i try to use itunes to burn a cd it tells me it cannot find the burner or the software. if i go into itunes preferences under "burning" it tells me "no supported devices found"
in the apple system profiler, it tells me there is a cdrw dvd-rom in the ata slot, but it is "not supported"
if i put in a blank cdr it asks what i want to do and if i click open finder, it tells me it cannot because there is no supported device.

now if i open toast (5.1.2.) it sees the combo drive and allows me to have the option to burn at a max of 16x's which is weird because it is only supposed to be able to burn at 8x's max on the 700mhz ibook. (and i have used toast to burn at least one cdr so it does work)

also the combo drive will read music cd's, data cd's, dvd's, and cdrw's.

i called apple support and told the tech what was going on and he said
"i have no idea, you should just do a archive and install or a complete clean install using the OSX cd" when i advised him about toast telling me it will allow 16x's burning, he said "that's odd you should only be able to burn at a max of 8x's" i told him the ibook was an apple refurb purchased off the apple website and "maybe" the combo drive had been replaced with a 16x's capable drive? he said there was no way of knowing what it was refurbished for.

so, what do you experts think? OSX bug? and do you think a "archive and install will fix the problem?

i am not worried about it, because i would rather use toast anyways. but it should work as it is intended

I would try to zap the PRAM (press cmd-option-P-R during startup until you hear the sound). Which version of Jaguar do you use ? 10.2 ? I would update to 10.2.3 at least or 10.2.4.
