I can't think of what it's called when your computer crashes in OS X a kernel... something... Can anybody tell me what it is? I had the crazyest lockup the other day.. I lost everything! I installed a brand new WD 120GB HD and my computer locked up... spit a whole bunch of stuff across the screen and... my drive became useless... barely recovered this brand new 120 gb hd!

Kernal Panic.
In 10.2 when a KP happens you get a nice dialog that says "Restart your computer now" in 5 some odd languages.

Just to be clear, not every crash is a kernel panic. When you get a multilingual box telling you to reboot, that is a kernel panic. However, if your system just freezes, this could actually just be a GUI lockup that doesn't involve a failure in the kernel.

No I did not get that nice screen with this kernel panic... I got the old fashioned black type across the screen that runs all over the place... the old school kernel panic...
It was strange... like I said, I rebooted and my HD would not even show up... I launched disk utility from another drive I rebooted from and the crashed hd would not even show up... even when I booted into os 9 and used the classic disk util... I thought I had lost my new 120gb hd... it was not a fun event... I was using my box as a server for a windows box that I had connect to it via samba everytime I booted the win2k machine up... everything was fine.. then apple came out with the new samba patch... I installed it and rebooted... then while I was transfering files the windows machine lost it's connection for a sec... I reconnected it... and a couple hours later I walked into the other room to check the mac... and that's when I saw the kernel panic... old school... like I said... I'm guessing it had something to do with the new patch, but I can't understand how that took out my entire hd...!

True.. fair enough... but I got it working again and have no problems so far... only time will tell I guess... I've been having a lot of different hardware issues accross mulitple platforms lately and I actually suspect inside hacking at this point as a possible cause... like I said only time will tell for sure.
