or should i say quitting programs.

im new to macs and this is really bugging me, how can i quit a program just by clicking on the "x" in the top left corner? it only seems to put it in the dock and i have to manually go and 'quit' it. anyway to just quit it when i press the X. some programs like Mplayer do that, but safari and such doesnt.

also anyway to maximize to full screen? it seems to only maximize to the top left corner of my 1024x768 screen.

The X button closes a window. It doesn't do anything to the program the window was in. Some programs that only ever have one window will quit when you close their window, but that isn't normal. To quit a program, you choose "Quit" in the application menu.

And in most applications, option-clicking on the grow widget will make a window expand to fill the screen.

Apple and Q keys at the same time will also quit an application (a little easier on the wrists than file menu quit...:-}
