have you tried deleting the following files:
System Folder/Classic
System Folder/Classic Support
System Folder/Classic Support UI
these files are used when you use classic, but not when you use 9.2.2 native.
Let me know if this solves your problem
cheers

Additionally, try doing what it says - hold down the shift key as Classic is starting.

Not a bad idea that with the shift Key!
On that subject, there are a bunch of options in the System Preferences/Classic which may be of use...
I'm not sure that this will solve the issue in this instance, if the computer will boot in Mac OS 9 without any issues, the extensions should be ok (except if the user has different extension sets for Mac OS 9 Nataive and classic)
Or am I wrong?

I think the idea was to make the system reinstall these files..
Looks like that didn't work..
Probably a part of the system that works only while classic is running.. try putting a fresh copy of the system file, and deleting those 3 files again..

Can you open your Classic/OS9 system folder, select all and copy. Paste that into here. Then do the same for Control Panels and Extensions.
Can't promise anything, but we'll try our best!

Yay 127, Brings back memorys!
Looks like and extension or control panel, or both conflict.
Use your powers of deduction to eliminate the criminal/criminals.
Go onto the extensions folder and remove everything which is not made by apple.
That should work.

I hate to say it, but your best bet may be to reinstall (OS 9, not OS X).

If you have a copy of Conflict Catcher (Casady & Greene) that might help.
You could try DiskWarrior. That very often get things going again.
Then, when these two don't work/help, I'm afraid you have to do what you said you don't want, and what CharlesS said: reinstall OS 9

The error whch you are getting may indicate a minor problem with your hard drive. If you follow Geobunnys' advice (make a new folder, call it eg. classic, and paste the files there), you place the files in another location on the hard drive (you might want to bless this folder, by taking the finder out and putting it back in again), you reduce the probability that the 3 files I mentioned get writen to the same blocks on your drive. If you of these blocks is damaged you would get this message. Norton Disk doctor may help (don't repair any Mac OS X files!!!)
After making a second system folder for classic to boot from you will need to go to SystemPreferences and select it as your classic volume.
Hope this helps

What about moving all the preferences out of the (OS 9) Preferences folder?. If you use the option of merging your OS 9 and OS X Preferences, it will be a mostly painful process...
You can also try to move your extensions to the "Extensions (Disabled)" folder. That is basically what the Extension Manager does. Same applies for the Control Panels.
HTH.
Sorry. I was late
