If you are running 10.2 or newer, the Canon Lide or Epson Perfection scanners work fine. As far as I know, drivers for 10.1 are dodgy

I'm afraid you might be out of luck here... or at least reduced to using the Classic environment. VueScan doesn't, and evidently won't ever, work with Umax USB scanners, and Umax certainly doesn't look inclined to upgrade their drivers for those older USB scanners.

I had one too, and used it happily with Canvas 7 (running in Classic). Then I gave in and got a really nice Epson scanner that works like a charm in OS X.

I gave up on Umax ages ago. Cannon works with VueScan. I find VueScan works better than the supplied drivers.

Same here...

My Cannon seems just fine... I once talked about Umax as being a great company, now I just don't talk about them...

VueScan works just great with my Astra 3400 USB scanner...fully supported! You might want to go check VueScan's list of supported scanners.

I have a Snapscan 1212u that is USB. When I went to OS 10.2 I figured I would have to buy a new scanner. After several attempts at downloading new drivers from the AGFA site I finally got it to work. Works perfectly for me in OS 10.2.4. Good Luck

I have an Epson Perfection 1200U scanner that works beautifully in OS X via the Epson Twain plug-in.

I also have an Epson 2450. I downloaded the OS X drivers from the Epson website and it works perfect. I use the TWAIN working from Photoshop.

A little bit out of topic: It scans a little dark. How could I calibrate it? Is there any profile for it?

Still using the old Canon N650 U OSX drivers
downloaded from Canon. Do the new Canons
come with Photoshop Lite? The OSX drivers
require Photoshop or PhotoShop LE be installed.

I got my epson LiDE 30 for 70 bucks on the net, shop around. It is killer quality and has a stand alone app, but i always use the PS7 Vue Scan Plugin off canons website.

Here's a ringing endorsement for the Epson 1260 from me, too. I paid next to nothing after rebate and it integrates into OS X better than my old Microtek ever did with OS 8/9.

It's funny lots of people connect "Apple" with "graphics world", while so many scanners are not supported anymore.

So far for the plug&play Apple once was known for.

I'm lucky with my Agfa 1210u, works. But Umax is pain in the ass.

Sorry, but I just don't get any of this...
Epson does not make LiDE scanners, Canon does. VueScan is scanning software, but it is not made by Canon and certainly not available on their web site. It is also not a PS plug-in, but a stand-alone app. And finally, the LiDE 30 lists for 79 bucks on Canon's site.

if you buy a new scanner you should buy an epson.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16027

They Work with Apple's Image Capture scan software, works perfectly and it works directly with all OS X computers without installing/buying other software

I'm not at my Mac at the moment but there's a way to invoke all of the TWAIN options that Epson provides directly through ImageCapture. At the start of the scan, there's a way to revert to "manual" mode and that's where a whole multitude of options are presented with the Epson TWAIN driver, including resolution. Root around and I think you'll find it -- post back and let us know. From my experience, once you've done that once, the default becomes the manual option which is a good thing.

if your scanner its too old for osX, say goodbye.. even MEN can say an unfair goodbye sometime.

I was suggesting VueScan to pearl2000 who was talking about an Epson scanner.

Please tell me EXACTLY what Umax model you had/have. Thanks.

Dear Marc:
Thank you for taking the time to contact UMAX technical support.

Unfortunately, there are no plans to develop OS X compliant drivers for any
of the Astra series or older consumer level scanners, with the exception of
the Astra 4400/4450 and 4000U.
At this time, Umax technical support does not support any Mac OS above OS
9.1 for the Astra Scanners. Umax technical support does not recommend
loading current versions of VistaScan on any Mac OS above 9.1.
According to the licensing agreement that must be agreed with to install our
software, we may not be held liable for damage or loss of data.

There is no release date for the drivers available at this time, so please
keep checking our web site for any news or updates that become available.

Questions?

Q. How can I use MagicScan or VistaScan with Mac OS X?

A. When using Mac OS X, both MagicScan and VistaScan will not run in the OS
9 Classic Environment.

WORKAROUND:
The system must be restarted using Mac OS 9.
Set the startup disk in "System Preferences" to Mac OS 9 and restart the
computer.
MagicScan and VistaScan works under this condition.

When you're not using the scanner, you can restart back into Mac OS X.

Also, if you are in need of the latest drivers, they are available for
download on the Umax web site. You may also purchase a CD with the current
drivers available at our web site for $14.50. There are third party
softwares available to allow you to use your scanner with OS X. You can
research and find out more about VueScan at www.hamrick.com and SilverFast
at www.silverfast.com.
I hope this has been of some assistance to you.

Please remember to reply with all email history attached so that we may
better assist you, as we do not save emails.

Have a great day!

Best Regards,

Ms. Trenklerova

Subject: OSX Support

I have a Umax Astra MX3 scanner, when can I obtain OSX support?
I bought this based on reviews and Mac compatibility. Now with adoption of
OSX this is non-operational. Will you release drivers in the immediate
future or must I purchase a new scanner from someone else?

My copy of UMAX Vista Scan DA 3.5.2 (not the TWAIN plug in, the standalone program) included on the scanner install CD for my Astra 2200 works just fine in the Classic Environment. Did you give that a shot?
