This is happening to me all too frequently these days. Especially since I moved from Canon to Nikon. Although this may indeed be a coincidence. At first I thought it was the result of editing; enhance and/or adjustments in Adobe Elements, but even unedited images give these folks trouble.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Make sure filenames have the proper extensions i.e., .jpg, .gif, ect....

What's the context?
Are these photos uploaded to .Mac Homepage?
Are they emailed?
Put on another web site?

For some reason, my iPhoto images have the extension .JPG, as opposed to .jpg, that may be a problem

No, I don't think that's it. I went back to some of my older sent msgs that did work and they had the caps also. I even tried to chage the name on an image this am and nada. In fact, I have an idle aol account that I use when I'm on the road occationally and my attempt to send an image to myself didn't work either!

I have noticed that if I try to send enough images that AOL automaticly compresses them and then they won't open as you describe.
I found that if I send them one at a time they are not them compressed and can be opened.
I am not really sure if this is the same thing you are describing but it was a work-around for me,although it's a pain in the Ass.

Are the AOL people using a PC? When I email things to my PC, mail splits it into two files, I can't remember photo's doing it, but .pdf's and .txt files get split into an empty file named correctly, and a file named mime.<extension>, with the latter file being what i needed.
