What is the worst part of the next major OSX upgrade? I don't see any possible way for Jobs to mispronounce it.
Hearing him repeat "Jag-Wire" over and over at various keynotes, it was just too funny. My only hope is that he pronounces it "pant her", but I don't think that is possible.
Sorry to waste your time.

Jag-wire is the pronunciation used by the sports car maker. It's also how most of us on the west cost say it. Just because it's wierd to you doesn't mean it's wierd to the rest of the world. I think the way you guys say it sounds like a bunch of hicks out of indiana (and trust me i would know)

Really? Seen many Jaguar commercials? Every one I've seen has a pretigious ass that clearly pronounces it jag-u-ar. That's the way to pronounce it.

In the UK they say "Jag-yoo-are" I think this must be correct because they invented them, they also invented such fundamental basics as Television, Air and Wheels.

Here is Merriam-Webster's enter on Jaguar. This should be the final word on the subject.

They even have audio pronunciations you can listen to. Guess which pronunciation isn't on the list?

Funny that I feel compelled to jump in on this one, but here goes...
Who cares about the car make? Those aren't English racing stripes on the OS X 10.2 box, they're rosette patterns in the pellage of a 100 Kg wild cat - Panthera onca.
Jeez, I know we're all geeks in here, but come on guys. Let's at least debate the pronunciation of the real deal.

Yeah. And no surprise, given that its a Spanish word of indigenous American extraction. So, really, its "jog-hu-are" or more properly "yog-hu-are..."
The Brits say Jaag-Yoo-are, and also call that little Central American nation Nic-uh-RAAG-yoo-uh. Hardly the models for Hispanic pronunciations, our Atlantic cousins.
Just wait until OSX 10.x -- "Ocelot..." Doh!
And to continue truncheoning the equine corpse, to call 10.3 "Panther" is redundant or improper. Panthera is a genus, not a species, where both Puma and Jaguar have been species (Jaguar is a species of Panthera, and Puma a species of Felis).
OK, got to finish up my porn surfing in time to watch my Star Trek videos before mom makes me go to bed.

I work for Jaguar. I can tell you that the correct pronunciation is the British 'Jag-you-are'. I'm not sure what the policy is on enforcing this with our pronunciation-challenged US dealers though

Out here in old Europe we say "Yah-Goo-Ahr" and that fits pretty well the writing. But that is a general english problem. In no other country you write "Worcester" and say "Hooster" :-)
I followed this thread with great pleasure, truely...
Best regards, Michael

Funnily enough, you wouldn't pronounce it 'Hooster' in the UK either, it's pronounced 'Wooster' (the 'ces' in the middle is pronounced like 'ss')

Why is everyone focusing on the car maker? That's fur on the box.
I'm inclined to pronounce Mac OS X v10.2 'Ja-gwhar', and I'm in The South.
BTW: Pronunciation: 'ja-"gwär, -gy&-"wär, -gw&r, esp British 'ja-gy&-w&r

The Worcester here in MA is pronounced Wooster. And its funny, because you tell which settlers were from MA when they settled there because there are "Woosters" all over the place.

well, I'm from Scotland and Jaguar was a british car company, not sure who owns it nowm think it's GM, but as they were made here, in this country, it has always been pronounced Jag-yoo-ar, no-one says jagwire here, it sounds strange that way, but, that's the beauty of language, colloqualisms abound and are an interesting side bit to us humans. lol,
Let's see how many people can pronounce Hebrew/Arabic place names, it's so funny watching the news here and how they try to say foreign names.

Well, really it is Woostah, I can't think of too many N.E. natives who can prodounce their R's at the end of a word.

I must say, since this post is A COMPLETE JOKE, it is absolutely hilarious to see everyone bitch about jag-wire. I want to make one thing perfectly clear, having been born and raised in San Diego and living another 18 years in Oregon, I can honestly say that "jag-wire" is definitely no "west coast thing".
Ok..but back to the serious debate regarding PANTHER.
#1 possible mispronunciation given by this thread: PAIN-THER
#2: PAN-THAH
Thank you for wasting your time with this thread--it's truly been a blast!

Whether it will be worth upgrading or not is and will be a matter of opinion. I agree with the other poster. It's really going to have to be a Major upgrade all right for me to shell out another $130 USD so soon.

Coming to the thread a bit late, but I always pronounced it Jag-wire, and so I didn't notice anything unusual until people started making fun of it. To me Jag-war or (got help us) Jag-u-ar sound strange... To each his own, I guess. BTW I am from the midwest.
PS Don't get me started on the pronunciation of "coupon"...

Well I pronounce Jaguar like the car comercial, I say Worcester like so: "War-ches-ter". But it is true that many people just take the r off of the end of many words in N.E. I've never heard that town pronounced without the "ches" part in the middle.
