I made my invisible files visible with the lovely Cocktail utility, and then pasted a nice icon to the .Vols folder and put it in the Dock.

This way and new media automatically appear in this folder, and I can remove all my hard drives from the Dock - freeing up valuable space.

For some probably logical reason, my primary HD is not in .Vols, so I put an alias of it in there.

Then I made my usually invisible files invisible again...

Is this all safe, or have I done something really dumb?

yeah, that's safe. the reason your main hard drive isn't there is indeed logical. The only reason the other drives are there is because unix has created the abstraction of a Volumes folder and put links to other volumes in it. the main hard drive is just the main hard drive, there's no need to put it in the Volumes folder because you're already in it

Actually there is a good reason to put it in there. You can then right click on the Volumes folder and navigate all your drives. If you have FruitMenu installed you have unlimited levels, very sweet.

BTW: There is an easier way to do this. Use the Go menu and choose Go To Folder. Type /Volumes/ and this will open up your Volumes folder. Now click and hold on the folder icon that is in the titlebar and you will be able to drag it into the dock or hold down the Command and Option keys as you drag and it will make an alias.

I'm not sure how long you need to click and hold. Under System 9 it gave you feedback and would darken when you held long enough. Under X it does nothing to let you know that you have held down long enough.

Thx, yes this is much easier...

And all because I can't drag the 'booboo's computer' icon directly to the dock...
