Does this sound like fun for anyone else? OS X is great but there is plenty of room for massive interface improvements. Maybe we'll get a little speed too.

From the article:

Apple has been terse about enhancements that will appear in the new OS, although sources said Panther will include significant new GUI features.

From what little i've heard, the speedup is supposed to be significant. As for the GUI, I think a new file system and metadata scheme could allow for some pretty clever file sorting/searching mechanisms. That is where I imagine most of the innovation would occur with 10.3.

Matthew Rottenberg: I'll take "synonyms for 'name' for 100, Alex.
Alex: This is the original; God and Adam applied this to beasts.
Matthew Rottenberg: What is name?
Alex: That is correct.

Matthew Rottenberg: I'll take "synonyms for 'name' for 200, Alex.
Alex: A crafty one, suitable for spies.
Matthew Rottenberg: What is code name?
Alex: Right.

Matthew Rottenberg: I'll take "synonyms for 'name' for 300, Alex.
Alex: This Irish-Gaelix word might apply to "Alex", for "Alexander".
Matthew Rottenberg: What is moniker?
Alex: That is correct.

Matthew Rottenberg: I'll take "synonyms for 'name' for 400, Alex.
Alex: This French import is rarely used, but out of sheer desperation you use it twice in your article.
Matthew Rottenberg: What is sobriquet?
Alex: Well done.

I have also heard a rumor that the speedup will be significant, particularly for older machines. While I certainly hope this is true since all I own are G3-based machines, I am taking it with a grain of salt. I heard this information from a friend who heard it from "someone inside Apple." So who knows how reliable this is.

an Apple first, it will have a Start Menu. You will be able to choose shut down from this menu.

Where do you want to go today?

Oh yeah, and somebody on /. said he's seen a Panther build with pop-up windows.

Ok, not gonna say much but I could have a copy of thi as early as next week but from what I have been enlightened with, is that AS OF NOW, its still aqua, not Bruhed metal across the GUI, it has a refined aqau, and as far as how the os works is it has been extreme rethought, much better set up wizards, auto configs things of that sort. iChat 2 w. video chat is almost done, all it needs ae the device plugins. There is a very decent speed boost as reported on all the mac websites. So if I do get a copy, which is still very up in the airi'll report in

What's wrong with that? You 'start to shut down'. Just as you start braking to slow down the car

The big issue is whether they improved multithreading in the Finder as well as refining its interface.

While I disagreed with a lot of the recent ARS discussion on the Finder, it clearly does need serious work.

Same here. Apple would have to be crazy to not to seriously revamp the Finder (but not, IMO, the Finder's philosophy, which is evolving nicely).

My big curiosity is how Aqua will be updated. I'm really curious how Apple is going to resolve the Why Is This App Textured? corner they've painted themselves into.

http://arstechnica.com/paedia/f/finder/finder-1.html

I think this is a really good article about what apple is missing right now and in which direction os development should go.
It is not so much about brushed metal features or new desktop pics it is about much more.

I wanna see some innovations like the first introduction of collapsing windows or labels and all those nice lil handy stuff where you just get the feeling that somebody thought about the guy who has to use their gui.

i am very excited about panther.

Version that doesn't require LWP::Simple:
Code:
perl -e 'foreach $c (split(/(..)/, "687474703A2F2F7261696E73666F72642E6F72672F6D")){printf("%s", pack("c", hex($c)));}print("\n");'
Sorry, but rewriting this was less work than downloading & installing a Perl module. Hope I didn't violate any copyrights or anything...

Of course, this only decodes the URL, doesn't display the page. You could do something with wget, perhaps?

So not only will the start menu allow you to choose 'shut down,' but you can now put WALLpaper on your DESKtop...

Except that in order to press your brake pedal, you do not first have to press your gas pedal. Nor do you have to move the gas pedal out of the way. Also of signifigance is that both pedals continue to exist even when your car is turned off. Nor do those pedals by your feet provide you with access to your music, video, the Internet, your mail, windshield wipers, glove box, heat, AC, GPS, printers, recent documents, network connections, system services, various replaceable fluids (unless you have an older model) ... *trails off*

Get the picture? Oh wait, of course you don't! You were comparing a nowadays rarely used function in a computer operating system to an essential life-or-death function in an automobile.
