I have a white 500MHZ iBook with 10.2.4 and have recently been having problems with Mail and System preferences. Every once in a while my computer will only wake half way up from sleep mode. The white light will go out but the screen will remain black. This happened yesterday and i restarted. When it started up i noticed that Mail wouldn't open. It's icon would bounce ince or twice in the dock and then it would quit. It gave no error message. A little bit later i also noticed that System Preferences would not open. It gave a message that it unexpectedly quit. Today I tried starting up in Single User mode to run a disk repair. Unfortunately instead of pressing command s on startup i only pressed "s". When it started up it got past the mac os x thermometer bar and then got stuck at a blue screen. It never goes past that. I then was able to start up in single user mode and run disk repair, but that still won't help. I've read some of the forums about the aqua theme being messed up. I'm not sure how it would have happened. As a solution to the aqua theme being messed up, people on the forum message talked about recopying files from a working os 10.2 computer's os. I don't know where those files are so I'm stuck and don't know what to do. What else can i do that doesn't involve reinstaling the OS?

Repair the permissions. That same blue screen **** happened to me, and repairing permissions fixed it.

I repaired the permissions but it didn't help. It's still stuck at the blue screen.

does anyone know how to do an archive and install. I really don't know what to do i just want my computer to boot and get past this blue screen. I had to reinstall os x a month or two ago and i don't want to do that again. I've tried everything i know of and now i'm down to whatever advice someone else can give me.

An archive and reinstall will fix your system and is possible from the jaguar cd.

We'll leave that as a last resort.

Boot into single user mode and read the system log to see what has been happening. type "pico /private/var/log/system.log" to read it.

Report back and see if you can tell what part of the boot up process it fails on. It sounds like a broken loginwindow to me.

It was getting right past the progress bar. Right after that it would stop at a blue screen. I went ahead and did an archive and install. It worked fine and i'm back up and running. I still wish there was a solution that didn't require such drastic actions. Oh well, thats for the help everyone.
