I thought I read somewhere that there was a way to setup up your Mac to act as a wireless access point, turn on Internet Sharing and then all your other macs with wireless cards would work using the Mac as an access point.
Am I totally out of whack with this information or did I miss something?
Please let me know, my dad thinks I'm crazy (moreso than usual). Thanks in advance.

I think you can do this with OS 9, see this Apple KB doc

But not for OS X, there is a comment at the bottom of the article

Edit: whoops, my bad, it wasn't there in 10 or 10.1, back in 10.2

I'm not sure what your talking about but this is my setup.

2 Computers (TiBook & iMac) both with Airport cards, both running OSX. iMac is connected to the net via a broadband USB modem.
iMac is setup to share this net connection over airport to my powerbook.
I can surf anywhere in the house.

I have no Airport Base Station.

Does it also work over BlueTooth?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I do it, in OS X. It works. Doing it over Bluetooth I have also seen, but not on Macs - so maybe the software hasn't been written yet.

That's what I'm talking about. I have a cable router and modem. But want wireless internet in my house WITHOUT a base station. So it IS possible then.

It's definitely possible. And I'm pretty sure you can do this in OS X now (I don't use it, so check this first). It's called software base station. But you're still better off with a wireless router:
better reception
indepenent of other computers
better security
more expandable
more reliable

You can get a wireless router to replace your current router for as little as about 40 bucks. Definitely worth it.

Thanks for the advice. i'd most likely get a Linksys wireless router. If I didn't wanna waste money on an Apple station.

Yeah, you can do this easily in OS X. Just go into 'Sharing' in the System Preferences, go to the 'Internet' tab, make sure that "Share your Internet connection with AirPort-equipped comuters" is checked, and then click 'Start'.

This will also enable you to share your printer wirelessly.

One annoyance about this setup, though, is that the wireless sharing setting doesn't stick. Every time the computer is restarted, I have to turn it back on.

I'd personally get something other than a Linksys (though it'd probably work fine for most applications). Asante is a GREAT Apple supporter and makes fine eqpt. Netgear seems solid as well and is pretty pro-Mac. Plus Netgear's MR814 is dirt-cheap. Keep checking buy.com. It was like 30 bucks last week after rebate.

Bummer. No mail in rebate for me. That same thing costs 129 Euro here.

Oh well. 72 is STILL a great price. Keep watching that, though. It was recently 59 (maybe even 49?) before the rebate.
