I'm trying to use Apple Mail (on Jaguar) to send mail through my .mac account. I can check and receive mail just fine, but it can never seem to find smtp.mac.com to sen my outgoing messages.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Donovan

That's exactly what I've done, but my connection to smtp.mac.com is timing out. Again, no problems checking my mail, just sending.

I deleted all my accounts, and started from scratch. I checked the Internnt .mac pane to make sure it was correct. When I come back to mail, it automatically has my .mac account set up.

My outgoing mail server is "smtp.mac.com:donovanbuck" on the Account Information tab, but if I click the options button my Outgoing mail server there is "smtp.mac.com". Authentication is set to use "Password", and my username and password are filled in. Is this simliar to your configuration?

Thanks,

Donovan

Hi,

I've got the same settings you've described, except with my own password and username of course.

I'm not sure why this isn't working for you. Perhaps you're using a firewall? Perhaps your .mac account at Apple isn't ready yet? Perhaps some administrative setting is locked?

I'm not great with networks and email troubleshooting, so this is all I can think of. As long as you have the info set up properly, it should work. Have you tried using Apple's mac.com webmail via your browser? What version of OS X are you using?

Hope you find a solution soon!

Try setting the authentication on the SMTP-server to not use the password.

Sorry, I don't have any add'l suggestions for solving this problem in Mail. I got tired of these issues with Mail and all the time I was wasting on what is a pretty basic operation so I gave GyazMail a try and it works great. Imported all items from Mail and looks great.

good luck

This issue has come up for me before. It is not Mail's fault, is the ISP's "fault." IF you are using a dial-up connection to an ISP (e.g., earthlink) this may work for you:

1) Open Mail preferences.
2) Choose edit for your .Mac account.
3) Under outgoing mail server, change it to the mail server recommended by your ISP (usually in their mail instructions for your email address through them) mail by chosing options.

I had earthlink just all of a sudden change their setup and not allow outgoing mail to go through smtp.mac.com. One day sending mail worked, the next day it didn't!! I changed the outgoing server to smtp.earthlink.net and it worked just fine.

Hope this helps and good luck!

You da man Cambro. I use Earthlink also, and that's what it was. I can't imagine why they would block outbound port 25 traffic.

Thanks, now I don't have to drive to the office this morning to send my emergency eMail.

Best,

Donovan
