Maybe a stupid question, but could an ibook/powerbook be started in target disk mode when the hard drive has nothing on it? The reason for the question is I'm expecting a new 30GB HD to arrive for my ibook SE. I don't have a way of preloading it with the OS, so I thought I'd install it, then format it while attached to my tower...I have to know for sure because it's going to be a real pain to put this drive in and I don't want to go through the process twice!

Thanks,

Todd

Also, if I can't use target disk mode, could I connect the IBM Travelstar to the tower's extra drive connection? (MDD 867)

I could put in the new HD, then boot up from a CD, format the new drive, then start up in Target disk mode to copy everything I had saved on the G4 tower...

Now, could I keep my old system? That is, could I just copy everything off my ibook to the tower, install and format the new drive, then copy everything back?

Thanks,

Todd

yes, you can do this with your 'home' folder
considering you have everything installed in there. just move your home folder around.

And yes, the iBook should go into target disk mode even with a blank drive. TDM is a hardware feature, so it should be independent of what software may or may not be on the drive.
