Well, I was downloading a stuffed file in fetch, and when it was done it unstuffed and I went to go delete the stuffed file and another stuffit file I downloaded last night. And they wouldnt budge. It's happened to me before, but I just click again on them and then I can drag them anywhere. So I still deleted them, but had to with cmd-delete. I figured it was just my dektop but low and behold I cant move anything in any folder on the machine ! It's a PB 15/1Ghz with 10.2.4, and the last time I can remember moving something is last night...but I've been out all day today, so I don't know what would have done this. I'm sure a restart or logout will fix, but does anyone know why this might have happened?

This happened on my brothers configuration in eraly 10.2.x configurations. (I mean like in 10.2.0, etc). A reboot fixed it most of the times, but not every time. Seems like a nasty bug or a corrupted Desktop preferences file.

I have the same problem, but I haven't figured out what causes it, yet. For me it seems to happen sporadically. Not only does it affect dragging icons around in the finder, but pretty much anything that involes dragging things (like dragging e-mail messages from one mailbox to another in Mail). I can still click-drag to make selection boxes, though.

Logging out doesn't fix it. I have to restart the machine. This is with OS X 10.2.4.

Well, a logout doesnt seem to fix the problem, only a reboot would. I guess its some sort of system level problem. I guess no one here has any ideas?

An update:

I unplugged all my non-essential USB devices, disabled the haxies I bought from Unsanity, switched back to using the original Apple mouse, restarted, and haven't had the problem for the last 48 hours or so.

I'm going to slowly go back to using them and see if the problem still happens.

This is not an uncommon problem, and I doubt that it can be directly traced to any particular program or peripheral.

Just chiming in saying that the same happened to me last night for the first time.

A restart was the only thing I could get to fix the problem.

This is usually a problem with the pasteboard server (the Services menu should not be working either). Drag n drop is handled by placing drag items in a special drag pasteboard.

Try killing /System/Library/CoreServices/pbs in the Dock, and see if that helps.

pbs runs under each user id, so if it were the cause, one would think logging out/in would fix, but it doesn't.

However, I'll try killing it all the same if the problem happens on my machine again.

FWIF, I've had it that one time, never again. I've made no changes, same mouse, speakers, internet connection and firewire use for 5 months (its a TiBook), and its never happened again, so I dont think its linked to anything. I havent changed any habits, so I dont know what would cause it.

As for the services menu, I've had that not work before on its own if I do recall correctly, and nothing else was affected. SIGH....10.2.6 anyone?

Well, I've gone back to using my Third-party USB mouse, and started using LabelsX and WindowShadeX again with no problems.

It's when I activated FruitMenuX again that the same problem started up.

I'm going to try a few things first and maybe e-mail Unsanity as well to see if they have any tips or suggestions.

I'm now in the same position as you ppl
In my case it was necessary to use Nortons to cure some minor probs and to defragment my hard drives. Everything seemed better for that however now in OSX (I still tend to use OS9 for the most part) I can't move a single folder or anything on desktop, inside folders etc. I cant even drag an icon to TOAST!!!

Does anyone have any firm solutions plz?
