how do i go about partitioning my mac's hd ? i'd like to put a linux on it as well

you have to start up from your cd (or another startup medium like an external harddisk), then you can partition it with Disk Utility.
You will, however, erase everything from your harddisk, so maybe a backup would be nice.

UFS is not a good idea. UFS write support in Linux is still highly experimental and could cause Problems?. The best thing to do is to let your distro do the filesystem initialization itself.
