I came in this morning and no Macs could log into the server (xserve), so I plugged a monitor into the server and at first it all seemed locked up but after a while it let me type the admin username and password in but then just sat there saying it was loging in. In the end I had to reset it, but now it just boots to a grey screen with a Apple in the middle.

I have booted off the OS X Server CD and ran Disk Utility, the verify comes up with the error "catalog file entry not found for extent" and then tells me to repair volume %@. I have run a repair a few times but it still comes up with the same error.

Any ideas ?

Have you tried booting in Single user mode and running fsck?

I think that if you run it a few times you might get a little further than with Disk first aid. Silly observation, but you can also run disk first aid from the install CD

good luck

The sever will only boot to the grey screen with the darker grey apple in the middle.

How do I boot to Single User mode ?

How do I run things from the install CD ?

I can run Disk Utility as that is in the menu, when I boot the CD.
