I had to ask what "fsck" was and tried it.
No problems found. Tried to show the trick to my son and the terminal did not respond when I tried to type. Waited for a while and no response. Shut down the computer with front
button and restarted. Tried to boot from the
install CD to run permissions but it won't boot from the CD. Ran permissions straight from disk utility. Still can't boot from CD, using command C at startup. any ideas?

It's not command+C to boot from CD. You just press the C key while the Mac is booting.
