As most of you know, Final Cut Pro 4 was announced recently. I'm wondering what others were in regards to what it points to as far as potential OS X.3 Panther features. First we'll take a look at...
- Shortcut Buttons
You can create your own shortcut buttons that correspond to commands, and place them at the top (near the tabs) of Final Cut Pro 4?s Browser, Viewer, Canvas, Timeline and Tool Bench windows. You can click any of the shortcut buttons in this ?button bar? to perform commands, instead of having to enter key combinations or access menus. The shortcut button bars you set up are automatically saved when you quit Final Cut Pro 4, and restored when you reopen the application.
Final Cut Pro 4?s shortcut buttons display the icon of the command they perform, giving you a useful visual cue to their function. To make things even easier, tool tips for specified commands appear when you move the pointer over their corresponding shortcut buttons. And Final Cut Pro 4 lets you rearrange, organize, copy and drag buttons between windows to create an even more customized interface.
FCP 4 quick tour MP4. Shows the "poof" animation as shortcut buttons are removed (about 2/3 through video.)
Are these indicative of more customizability throughout the OS? Is Apple taking the idea of Dock and Toolbar flexibility and allowing us to put these wherever we want? Multiple docks?
Discuss...
coming soon: LiveFonts and more.

Yeh I'm not sure how I missed that "Possible Panther UI?" topic as being related to FCP 4. "quick glance?" Come now. Come now. And that topic seems to be centered on the UI of DVD Studio Pro 2, not the technologies and ideas incoporated into FCP 4.

Really the first two replies mention FCP and the rest of the topic is exactly the same as this one.
But hey, a whole discussion on FCP and NOT DVD studio should bring a wealth of new information.

Yes. I dig into EVERY topic on this board, despite whatever the subject may be titled.

Good. Then why did you miss it as it was just a couple topics below yours?

it's about S-A-S being an A-S-S

Sorry I just came up with that today and really love it
Yeah essentialliy someone made a post about possible UI features in panther and SAS saw that it was simlar to something someone else posted... and he freaked out... but then again if you freak out at every post that looks similar to another... you probably shouldn't read the OS X forum around public beta time.

Cocoa Text
The text system has always been one of the central components of Cocoa, but this year it's getting some exciting new features that will make it more useful and powerful than ever. We'll briefly review the architecture of the Cocoa text system, then dive in and show you how to start making use of its new capabilities.
There have been rumors that Panther will sport new Cocoa text capabilities. Well if this is true, then LiveFonts surely must figure into the picture.
LiveFonts are a new kind of font. They bring your titles to life with color and character. Designed by professional animators, LiveFonts let you type out sophisticated animated font styles as easily as you'd type out a system font. And because they're created in 32-bit alpha-channel, they key right over video.
...
The result of an innovative new 32-bit file format called ActiveFile data (.afd), LiveFonts changes the rules in the studio, giving Mac a decisive edge when it comes to animating titles. The only 32-bit format for fonts, ActiveFile data lets you designate movies as characters, and these movie characters are then compiled into LiveFonts.
all emphasis my own
Will we be seeing something like this on a system-wide basis in Panther? Maybe just something new avalable for Cocoa applications to tap into? Is there a Quartz Extreme connection? Am I insane or just overly enthusiastic?
I have no clue. That's why I present it here to you good people to mull over.

I wonder if FCP 4 along with Shake would beat a Quantel Paint Box in chroma compositing tests. The big problem is different saturation of blues or greens due to lighting setups. Then you have to do color corrections and all that mess...
I'm sorry but I really just got a chance to see FCP 4 today. This is ****ing great!

I like the new look of FCP, and if it turned out to be the new look of Panther, I'd be happy with it. I recently switched back to Aqua, though; I'd missed it.

I got to see a demo of FCP earlier tonight. The tent in my trousers still hasn't fully receded. It's that juicy.
After seeing LiveType in action, it's hard for me to believe that we won't see some of this technology as a framework available for other applications to draw on. Keynote is a no brainer, but non-motion apps like AppleWorks could certainly benefit it seems.
Databasing throughout, in real-time, easily searchable ("like iTunes.") Extensibility:
For Panther: rapid, user-friendly, portable databases throughout. Especially the Finder. Think "piles." Think BeOS-like file system. Think a massive set of user prefs contained in one XML file, ready to grab and go, intelligently adjusting from one machine to the next (treating remote files and apps like offline media.)

Where you getting all these features with FCP 4 running on 10.2? Mainly the searchable database side of things.
I am still hoping that the July/August release dates fro DVD Studio Pro and FCP mean that we'll be seeing panther at the same time.

Public beta time?
That was arround 3 years ago, it quite easy to avoid the forums in a specified time period which will never happen again.

I just installed FCP4. There is definately a whole new UI at work there, especially in apps like LiveType and Soundtrack. The new pro flavor seems to be similar to iTunes, but w/o the metal skin; all grey. Lotsa smaller black buttons.
Installed along with FCP4 is ProKit.framework.

Not to change the topic of the thread but I just finished a system wide theme which was wholly inspired by FCP4 and DVD SP2.
If you ever venture into OSX themes you can get it here:
