Hey, how do I install .fon or .bdf fonts in osx? Where is my font path? if I have a fonts.dir file, can I just add that folder to my font path like in linux? Dragging the .bdf or .fon files into the fonts folder did not work. Do i have to relogin to activate it or something?

Fonts live in /Library/Fonts. You'll need to quit any apps first before they can see the new fonts.

You may want to download Font Doctor -- I believe they have a demo version. I'm not aware of what type of fonts those are. I'm only aware of postscript, truetype, bitmap, and opentype. If they are a type of suitcase it's possible they are empty or are corrupt. Font Doctor will help diagnose if they are valid font files and whether or not they are corrupt. It can also rearrange and organize them into standard suitcase files. Good luck.

i'm not sure what a suitcase is, but these fonts have been used in win2k, winxp, debian and redhat with no problems at all. i guess i will give font doctor a try. is there a font converter available? i think bdf might be bitmap type but i'm really not sure.

I think the only Win fonts OS X recognizes are the True Type Fonts. Font Doctor converts fonts.

I think I figured out your problem. Those files are pure bitmap fonts which are not supported in Mac OS X. OS X only supports vector based fonts like Postscript and Truetype.

Can I ask what these fonts are and what you are using them for? Do you have TrueType or Postscript equivalents?

Their are programs that will allow you to view the fonts but you can't use them in programs nor would you really want to.

Postscript and Truetype are superior in almost every way except for a few special cases.

i want to use this font only in Terminal, or xterms and similar things. it is a pretty sweet font for terminals, IMHO. What can I do to convert these or get them to work with Terminal? Thanks for you help.

I have a .fon "custom made" windows font that I have never been able to convert to a usable format. I tried a number of classic apps, as well as some X apps to no avail.

I will be interested to see if you are able to do it.
