Where does Mac OS X save the desktop pic the system is currently using? I made myself one, put it up on my desktop and then stupidly deleted the original file... so now the picture is still up on my screen, but the original file is nowhere to be found...

I dont want to re-make it again!!!

Hide the dock and get all the icons off the desktop, then take a screenshot.

More than likely, that picture isn't anywhere but RAM right now. (correct me if I'm wrong, someone, since I usually am )

And quit all apps, including the Finder (use TinkerTool), before doing Command-Shift-3, if you don't want to get the menu bar, its shadow especially, in said screenshot.

If you want it in something other than PDF, use the export feature of Preview.

And, in response to your question, /Library/Caches/Desktop Pictures/ seems to have the closest to what you were asking for, but I've not been able to make anything of those files.
