I have a question -

I've been collecting different pictures to use as wallpaper, and have been resizing them to fit the 1440 x 900 resolution of the 17" Powerbook screen. On average, the pciture file size is between 600 and 400K.

My question is, is this too large (file size wise) to be used as a wallpaper? Will a 600K .JPG desktop picture have a negative impact on performance?

Many thanks,

Wet Jimmy.

Doubtful. I used a 9.3 MB PSD file as my desktop for a long time without any difference, and I use 600K+ JPEG's regularly.

I use an app called xBack (puts my screen saver as the wallpaper) with no problem at all even when watching multiple movies at once.

In general, the only time there will be any noticeable impact is when the desktop picture has to be reloaded. This is actually fairly rare, but when the screen resolution or depth changes, or if the Finder must reload for some reason, you might see a performance hit. But that would be just about the only time you'd see any problems.
