on my wishlist for panther would be a built in image browser, a la Photoshop's new image browser.
iPhoto is great for what it does, but it's way too heavy and complex for simply browsing pictures already stored on your hard drive.
maybe they'll build this functionality into Preview 3.0? it seems like it's halfway there.

that would be a nice idea for preview 3.
when i want to view a lot of photos in the same folder i select them all and double click one of them and prievew opens them all in a drawer.

that's exactly what i meant by "half way there". you should be able to drag a whole folder to the preview icon and/or there could be a "Browse..." command under the file menu. you should be able to drill down to view pictures inside sub-folders, etc.

Icon view with large icon size == image browser.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Are you aware that the Finder will show thumbnails of pictures if you tell it to in View Options? With the icon size set to the biggest setting it's really nice for previewing.
<shameless plug>Or you could just get iSee </shameless plug>

A quick Version Tracker search and...
Image Browsers for OSX
Apple does not need to build everything into the OS. If they go too far down that path, no developer will want to build anything for OSX b/c Apple has already built it in (PDF/Acrobat) or will steal the idea (Watston/Sherlock).

I really recommend gBrowser, its very light and has many options. And it also doesn't have to make a copy of every picture loaded like iPhoto. Get it here.

Drop a folder onto preview, that's the lightest and free-est way and quite nice actually.

Drag the files on and they open in a preview drawer.
