When I upgraded to Jaguar I had it do a fresh install, so it put my old 10.0.4 (never booted into) System folder into a folder called Previous Systems.

That was about 3 months ago and it occurred to me that folder's taking up a lot of space and I want to delete it. But when I drag it to the trash it says "can't do that, owned by Root"....even though other folders/docs at that level are trashable without logging in as root.

So before I log in as root to delete it, I was wondering if maybe I'd be trashing something critical to my current system, and that's why it being treated as special. Anyone know if it's okay to delete Previous System?

Thanks

Yeh, I think you'd be fine deleting it.

Open a terminal.

type sudo rm -rf /path/to/previoussystemfolder/

and type your password.

if its called Previous Systems you will need to put quotes around the name for the term to recognise it. ("Previous Systems")

make sure you enter the correct path because there will be no warning or anything, once its typed its gone.

It's fine to delete. If there were any custom desktops or preference panes you had from before, you might want to dig them out of there first.

Alternative, non-Terminal, non-root way to delete:
1. select "Get Info", and change the owner of the folder to you.
2. Click the button to change all subfolders.
3. Trash it as before. Don't forget to empty the trash!
