I've tried intalling it through Fink, the installer package from osxgnu and compiling the source myself. Yet still "autoconf --version" shows 2.13 instead of the new one I just installed three times!
What is going on here?

at a terminal prompt and make sure it is running the one that you expect it to. For example, the one from Fink should be under /sw somewhere, not /usr..
