I looked all over Macnn forum last night to try and figure out how to print from my new 1GHz iMac to my Epson C80 printer that is shared on my wife's Windows XP Home system. I finally figured out what I needed to do and now I have it working so I wanted to post the directions for the next curious soul looking to do this:

First start on the Windows XP system:
-Click on Start --> Run --> type 'command' --> click OK
-Now type 'ipconfig' and record your IP Address
-Now type 'exit' to leave the command prompt
-Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Printers
-Right-click your printer and select SHARING
-On the Sharing tab click 'Share this printer'
-Type a share name that does not have any spaces in it
-Click OK
-Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Users --> Guest
-Turn on the Guest account so your Mac will be able to use the printer
-Click Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs
-Add/Remove Windows Components --> Other Network File and Print Services --> check Print Services for UNIX --> OK --> Next

Now to the OS X system:
-Open the Finder and go to Applications --> Utilities --> Print Center.
-Now click on the Printers menu and select Add Printer.
-Set the type to IP Printing
--Printers address is your XP machines IP address
--Uncheck 'Use default queue on server'
--Type the queue name as the name you shared your printer as.
--Under Printer model select your printer or a general in ESP.

Ihave a Epson Stylus C80 so I select the ESP --> EPSON Stylus Color Series CUPS v1.1 and it worked. This will vary by printer.

After all of that was complete I was now able to print to my printer attached to my wife's Windows XP Home system without any other hitches.

Hope that helps!

This is so very strange... I was just loooking at doing exactly this just earlier today! Have just tested it too, by printing out your post for future reference. My HP 940C works fins using HP New Deskjet Series CUPS v1.1.

Well done for working it all out for me!

Thank you very much, troymurray.

For reference sake, I used exactly the same procedure, but instead of printing to a Win XP Pro machine, to a Win 98se machine. With windows 98 the ip printing option does not exsit, so I chose to share the printer through samba/SMB. In order to facilitate the finding of the shared computer, I referenced it in Print Center through its IP rather than its share name. Worked like a charm.

I'm in nearly exactly the same position as you - Epson Stylus Photo 870 attached to my wife's Windows XP machine! Excellent instructions, thanks very much!

But wouldn't you have to change the IP address every time you restared the XP machine?

If not, this is very cool!

For your home network, you don't need to set dynamic IPs for all your machines (DHCP). I personally set up all four of our computres with static IPs so that I could find them easily for LAN gaming, network tests etc.

I followed the instructions and still had some problems printing due to lack of drivers for my printer.

I installed Gimp-Print and associated libraries, selected the Canon printer drivers that seemed closest to the model I have (I own an S900, had to use the S800 drivers), and followed the rest of your instructions.

Worked great, though the print is a little off in resolution... Not a huge deal, if I have something important to print I either hook up my printer directly to my powerbook, or copy it to my WinXP machine to print.

I saw this and tried it, since I've wanted to do this for some time now...

I only got some garbled stuff to print out on the top of one page of a seven page document, although six other blank sheets ran through the printer.

When setting up my PowerBook, there wasn't anything resembling my HP DeskJet 952C in the menu of HP printers. (However, when auto-selecting the printer in the "normal" add printer panel, i.e., to print directly from the PowerBook, it has many DeskJet models, and I use the 950 perfectly.)

So, is there something I can download from somewhere that will get a printer close to the HP952c in the list of printers in the IP Printing setup menu?

I'm sorry but I don't know that for sure. I know that my Epson C80 printer was not listed either in the menu so I selected the closest match on the ESP menu. Does that menu (rather then the HP) have a Deskjet driver?

I'm trying the same thing with my HP Laserjet 1000 and Win 2K professional.
The good news is that for the 1st time the printer actually attempted to print something

The bad news is that it doesn't print anything. I'm also using gimp print and there aren't any drivers for the 1000. The closest is the HP Laserjet 1200.

Anyone with any other ideas?

The resource that you should use to find out about how to configure your printers with gimp-print is http://www.linuxprinting.org. Great site. From there, I found this link: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...-DeskJet_952C.. And Toyen, here's your link: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...LaserJet_1000. Seems like the HP 1000 is a bit of a weirdo. HTH

I did the same thing using Samba...the downside to using CUPS...is that you need to use one of the recommended printers to have your printer operate correctly.

For instance, I had an Epson 890...that driver is in CUPS and it worked fine...however, I attached a Canon i850 and since there is no driver for he i850 in CUPS I am screwed. I had to resort to using a 'close-enough' driver. My prints come out badly...so this really isn't a solution for everyone.

I don't see why they just don't make it easier for Macs to play nicely with PCs and vice-versa.

Thanks to this thread, I was able to get two Macs to print to an HP PSC 750 on a Compaq running Win2k.

Only problem is, it has stopped working. I succesfully printed to the HP from a PowerMac and then a day later it wouldn't work.

IPs are static, so that's not the issue. Anyone have any ideas?

There is a blurb on how to do this in the 2003 June issue of Macworld. I'll try to dig this up later.

I know that 10.2.4 or 10.2.3 (I don't remember which one) killed printer sharing via Samba. There's a thread on these boards where someone was kind enough to provide the working smb binaries to replace the new disfunctioning ones. I'm too lazy too search unfortunately.
I think the topic was something like "10.2.4 killed SAMBA printer sharing".

Well, I guess this has been removed. Dammit. I didn't even know it was there before I saw this article.

I can't find the "Windows Printer Via Samba" option any more in the Add --> Advanced in Print Center.

Why has it been removed?

I still see it (10.2.6). Opetion-click the add button and there it is.

I seem to remember something about having to make symlink somewhere, but it's been a while.

Should this work on 2000 as well? I cannot get it to work. I think the Guest account is enabled and UNIX print services are installed. When I go to Users and Groups, the Guest account is there. I'm not sure how to enable or disable it. When I go to "Add Windows Components," I go through the steps and it doesn't install anything (or ask for a CD). The boxes are already checked. I assume it's because someone else installed it.

Would it help if I installed Windows XP or should I be able to get this working with Win2K?

I actually had this working with both of my printers that I have hooked up to my XP machine, but once I set the PC to a static IP address, it doesn't work any longer. Anyone have an idea of why? (I'm sure the IP is right... I can still connect to my shared folder...) It just sits there trying to connect to the IP address.

Not positive, but It should work on Win 2k as well (at least with SP2 installed). There is virtually no difference as far as print goes between the two OS's.

I have an hp 970cxi, im able to print to it but just blank pages come out. I noticed someone said they downloaded the drivers and used them, how did you do this? I installed the 970cxi drivers and even restarted the computer but it still does not show under the hp printer model list. I am a total *nix noob, just got this ibook two days ago and I have no idea where these drivers are installed to. I noticed if you choose "other" for the printer model you can browse to the file. Where does it go once installed? Seems odd that connecting to windows shared drives is so easy but the printer thing is a nightmare :|

also, how in the hell can i set my folder view to show everything as "list" view instead of the giant icons for ALL of my windows? thanks for any help!

Good luck getting a LJ1000 to work...

we've got a couple of those at work that I've been trying to share to my machine for ages.

At the moment I'm stuck printing to our old 6P, it's the only printer in the office that X seems to play nice with.
