I was expecting that the 10.2.5 update would keep my iBook from resetting to 1969 after a shutdown... but it did not.
Did I do something wrong? Anyone have a clue?
I can go the the local dollar store and get a stick on clock that keeps better time.

I been having the same problem. It was explained to me by the local Mac Genius that whenever the power plug is connected to the iBook it must have power running though it. In other words, it should not be connected to the iBook without also being connected to electricity. Apparently there is some chip in that area that malfunctions otherwise.
Practically this means that always connect the power cord to the electricity first and then to the iBook. When disconnecting, always disconnect it from the iBook first.
I did not know this when I first bought the iBook and it was not explained in the manual that I can remember (that and also that little plastic tab next to the num lock key to hold the keyboard down, got my screen all marked ).

What model iBooks do you both have?
I have never heard this 'fix' before... I have an older model iBook that is treated as a desktop, and a new style iBook that i use from time to time, both nearly aways plugged in, often without the power supply turned on... I have seen no issues at all date/time wise.
It sounds to me like the internal battery is more likely playing up on your ibooks rather than anything else...
Peace,
Marc
P.S. As for screens, a cover is always adviseable... It is a frequent issue that the keyboard 'marks' the screen when the laptop is in transit or being pressed together. If you still have the polystyrene screen cover that came with the iBook, ths does the job just as well. Failing that, even a piece of paper will help things...

Does Apple use PRAM batteries anymore? that's what I would've always diagnosed in the Performa days if a Clock forgot it's settings.

Not in the notebooks. If you completely drain the battery it will reset the the time.
