Thanks for the heads-up!
This was a mite unexpected, seems to have slipped past the rumor sites. Still welcome though, installing now...

Great... tabs for non-pirates now . But I have to get it from their website, seems the Software Update offers it only if you have it in your Applications folder?
Opening the .dmg always confuses me since it destroys itself. I'm not sure whether to like that or not.

Mental note to self - you can't use safari to post to MacNN when Safari is being updated.
: )
Hopefully this will end all those tedious tabbed-browsing threads.

also be sure you replace your old safari with the new one or it might just launch the old one.

Is faster.
Also nice that when it opens, it is finally positioned correctly.
Tabs and autofill are great.

Not entirely true, you can use safari while it's being updated, but it really doesn't like it! The line under my bookmarks bar (destined to become the tab bar) kept appearing and disappearing, then Safari crashed. Oops

I thought this was done automatically. Am I missing something? Do I have to run software update, then go to the applications folder and trash the old Safari version? The other way around? What are the details I should know here?

Yes, Software Update only offers it if it is inside the Applications folder.

Man, they just never fix that bug. The bug is a dead spot about the autofill button... you put your mouse there to drag the window and it does nothing. It is so annoying, since some reason thats where I always drag the window!

Finally! I've been using v62 since it appeared because I wanted tabs. It will be nice to use a legit version again. BTW 2.9Mb download.

so far, this thing flies. i have only 2 minor complaints so far:
tab switching is kind of slow at times, even with only 2 or 3 tabs open.
i'm still waiting for them to get the 'check spelling as you type' pref to stick between sessions.
other than that, this browser is truly amazing. loads pages lightning quick, looks great, and the feature set is starting to set it at par with the other big time browsers for mac.

I don't have it in software updates but I DO have it in my applications folder. It's not in my USER applications folder...it's in my main applications folder. I'll move it but I think the root application folder was the default.... I didn't install the new java....might that be the issue?

Tab browsing is unbelieveably, completely and utterly intoxicatingly cool!!
I'm seriously impressed by it... No more screen full of browser windows!! w00t!
Peace,

(I know, I've already been told that little things please little minds and all that , but it is just so, so cool...)

it *still* can't handle signing on to Westlaw.com. Some cookie issue that isn't present in any other browser.
And spell checking settings still wont stick!

Getting it installed was a Safari in itself
Decided to download from Apple rather than Software Update
Although I have IE 5.2.2 set to decode files - ended up with a 3.7mb .hqx file
- stuffit couldnt open it - after playing with the file extensions tried .dmg
Sure enough Disk Copy started to do it's stuff and mount it - but nothing appeared on the Desk Top neither .dmg or opened image
Looked in the Trash - sure enough there was the .dmg
Dragged it to Desktop - got Disk Copy to mount it - then dragged it to Applications
Double clicked the App - crossed fingers- IT Works!! ;-)
It seems faster - I likes it!!
But maybe Apple wants us to use Software Update - rather than getting the .dmg -
Ps - why does it throw the .dmg in the Trash

Interesting:
Antialiasing seems to be turned off for some parts of this forum. This is a good thing, in my opinion.

FYI, there's a new "do JavaScript" command in the AppleScript dictionary for Safari. We've posted some new scripts that take advantage of this at:
www.apple.com/applescript/safari/
One script searches the front document for linked thumbnail images and opens the target JPEGs in their own tabs!
Another script combines open windows into a single tabbed window.
Enjoy!

It appears to have hosed my bookmarks. The file still exists, and all my old bookmarks seem to be in there, but Safari doesn't recognize them. Oh well, guess I'll have to enter them back in...

Never mind, I fixed the bookmarks by doing a little surgery on the .plist file.

The "E-mail URL" script is nice; however, it's truncating some URL's (for examle, any listed eBay item link), therefore making them useless.
Is that a bug? Thanks.

I cannot figure out if there's a way to change the order of tabs in a Safari window.
I tried using all and any modifier keys, but they do not seem to be draggable.
Thanks.

Too bad it still doesn't have gzip support. I really like to use that while surfing using GPRS. The only Mac browser that does as far as I can tell is Mozilla. Even IE doesn't!!
It still doesn't work with https when you are stuck behind a proxy either. I can't believe they haven't fixed that yet.
It doesn't autocomplete the url now if you fully qualify it (ie type http://server/). This is great for those of us in corporate settings that were tired of having to type our own domain name over and over again when getting to local servers Previously, it would expand out to http://www.server.com/
I just did a tcpdump and it looks like it still doesn't honor the "bypass proxy for these domains" setting either. All my traffic still got routed to the proxy server, even when bound for a local host.
Other than the proxy stuff that is still broken this is becoming a sweet browser. I really like that the "autofilled" fields are highlighted in a pale yellow to let you know what happened in those fields..

That's great, I think especially the 'Combine Windows' script will be very useful. It makes me wish to have an application-based script menu like iTunes (btw: are the iTunes scripts ever getting updated? I miss a working 'Remove Missing Tracks' badly).

try this version where AppleScript gets the URL:
Code:
tell application "Safari"
activate
if not (exists document 1) then
display dialog "No browser windows are open." buttons {"Cancel"} default button 1
end if
set this_URL to the URL of the front document
do JavaScript ("t=document.title;window.location='mailto:?Subject=Interesting%20Link&Body='+t+'\\n\\n%3C'+'" & this_URL & "'+'%3E\\n';") in document 1
end tell

This is weird and probably my head playing tricks on me somehow but the official v73 release feels slower and balkier than v71 which I've been using for the last few days.
I've deleted prefs and all that.
And maybe it's got something to do with 10.2.5, which seems to be causing many folks some problems.

Big font bug in v73. Where can I download and earlier version? MacNN doesn't display highlighted recent post bulbs. Thankfully there is a reset button. 10.2.5 installed.

Oh my God. I'm seeing the same thing. v71 was faster for me too. v71 was definitely FASTER on 10.2.4, for me, than v73. Anyone else get this too?

I had the same Westlaw signon problem. Using that handy 'Reset Safari' function in the Application menu cured all my Westlaw ills and I can now logon without issue every time.
Might also mention that under the Debug menu I have set 'allow expired root certificates'. not sure if that makes any difference.

Well, I could always log in if I deleted all my cookies every time, but that was a big pain. However, resetting Safari has seemingly (at least so far) fixed the Westlaw login bug - hope it sticks... (although I'm loving OW 4.5 so much, I might not bother to continue using Safari - time will tell).
