I doubleclicked on a .dmg file I just downloaded (BBEdit 7.03) and the initial DiscCopy screen opened briefly (nothing filled in the fields), then it went away, then an Alert message: "The application Disk Copy has unexpectedly quit."

I tried other .dmg files which had opened/mounted successfully and got the same message.

I've tried about everything to fix Disk Copy (dumping my prefs, system prefs, I repaired permissions) and am still getting the same message. As far as I can tell, all my other Apple-supplied utilities are running fine.

According to my bible, MacOSX the missing manual, the next step is to delete the program and reinstall it from the disk.

How would I do that? Is that possible with the OS X (10.2.2) CD? Even so, since then I've upgraded via Software Update to 10.2.4 (weeks ago), might there not be some DiskCopy-related files that have changed between the 2 versions?

Thanks

You can also try just starting Disk Copy by doubleclicking it and see if it still crashes.
Then, before you trash it, you could try to copy it and see if the copy works.

If you really need to replace it, get the 10.2.3 Updater (for me it looks like it was updated there last, and not in 10.2.4 or 10.2.5) and extract it from that .pkg file either from the terminal using gunzip and pax or one of these shareware tools

As a temporary fix, try using Mount. Search for it at www.versiontracker.com. It's supposed to mount DMGs faster than Disk Copy too.

thanks all. I downloaded Mount and then thought I'd give Disk Copy one last try.

I looked in Prefs and noticed there were none for Disk Copy. Meaning, when I dragged the .plist for disk copy to the trash earlier (one of the first things I tried) then tried starting it again, it apparently didn't create a new default .plist. Even after I repaired permissions etc.

So I dragged the old .plist that was still in my Trash over to the prefs folder and double-clicked on Disk Copy and it started up fine.

Weird, but it's working now. sigh...

i had this happen before... when copying one drive to another... inside the Disc Copy app there is a system-owned file that will not copy over... so it looks like you have a legit app... but you are actually missing the actual app...

look in show package contents for disc copy and then :

Disk Copy.app:Contents:MacOS:Disk Copy

and see if that file is still there. to fix mine... i ended up grabbing (contextual menu - copy then paste) and stuffing that file from another machine... re-putting it in the package... then running "repair permissions" to give it the right ones again (system/admin i think)

that might fix it.
