FruitMenu rocks, it also gives you right mouse click navigation on any folder or drive.Plus it gives you unlimited levels on everything including the dock.

If you put an alias to Volumes in the Apple menu you can navigate all your drives from there as well.

In the old days I'd have sympathy, not today with the 30 sec X start up tho.

-Tell him not to log out
-boot it up it 30 sec
-fruitmenu
-smack him in the head everytime he shuts down
-dont let him use your machine
-he shouldn't be on a computer if he can't read

I mean come on, shut down in the Apple menu isn't a grave situation.

I know there used to be a PLIST file you could edit that controlled the Apple Menu (people used it to get rid of the Get Mac OS X Software link, or to change the link to go to a website of their choice). I wish I could remember where it was located to help you out....

I don't know. And it's a problem for me too. I work at a Mac lab with OS X and even though we tell people to Log Out instead of Restart (like they had to with 9) people still restart or shutdown the computer.

On a side note, we have Safari launch at login so they don't have to look for a browser. Yet some people don't seem to realize that Safari is a browser. They just sit there dumb founded and ask us where the internet is. Some people look on the HD for IE and launch it while Safari is open in the backround. I tell ya, Windows makes people dumb.

Change Safari's icon to the Explorer "e" and rename it "Internet Explorer". Problem Solved.

But... then again they might say, "Um... why's it silver?"

How does the shutdown command from the menu work, isn't there a way to simply disable it?

You can customize all sorts of aspects of the menu, so you can have it just like before sans shutdown.

Or you could get something that maps commands to keys. And map Logout to an Fkey or something.

Or you could tape a reminder to his monitor the key combo for Logout.

Or you could customize Fruit Menu and only remove the Shutdown option (as stated above).

Or you could tell your friend to get a life and learn a simple key command. I mean really, is it THAT hard to remember it?? If accidentally hitting shutdown is a real problem for him, maybe he should invest some time in memorizing the key combo. Flash cards help. Or make a song out of it. Or a picture book.

Also, may I throw in that you might want to download my little 'Logout' Applescript application:

Throw that in the Dock, and your friend can just click the icon to logout, rather than navigating the hazards of the Apple Menu.

Oh, and - any reason you don't want to upgrade to 10.2? If you PM me your address I'll make sure you find a set of discs...

When I read things like this (and the problem of the first poster) I really ask myself: Are these people working in an mental assylum?. Really. I leve in Argentina, not the most "computerized" country by far, I have friends of mine that are really dumb with computers; but, seriously, I have never seen things like that. Much less in the environments where those behaviors occur. Maybe there is a suitable explanation for that.
