OS X built-in logging of system activities?

I was wondering if there is a built-in log in OS X that keeps track of computer shutdowns/restarts or other activities like this. I don't want to install any extra software, I'm just wondering if it does this by itself. Maybe in the console, or even something that the firmware itself does?

Sorry for the sheer ignorance, thanks for any help!
