I should have known better, but I applied the patch to disable sleep on lid close via kismac, and it appears to be incompatable with 10.2.5. How do I know this? Well, the system kernel panics during the initial startup screen (the grey apple one).

My question is this, I am low on hard drive space (~600MB) and as such, I was wondering if it is possible just to replace the appropriate kernel files without doing a complete reinstall of the whole system.

Any help would be apreciated.

In the same vein, has anybody gotten kismac .4c to work with 10.2.5 at all?

Turn it on and immediately hold cmd-s to start up in single user mode. Perform the file system consistency check (I think /sbin/fsck -y). Then mount the file system as writeable. I can't remember the command to do that (probably something like /sbin/mount uw / device name )

Now delete the kernel extension from /System/Library/Extensions folder. Be very VERY careful when you're doing the delete command (rm -r kernel extension name) because you are running as root and if you put a space in immediately after a slash (/) you'll end up erasing your entire hard drive.

actually it seems that kismac makes a backup of the kernel when it makes its modifications, so i booted into 9 and switched out the bad kernel. thanks anyway though.

What? It actually patches the kernel directly?! That's a bit messy, isn't it?

yes, but i think its less messy than say, sticking a notebook between the keyboard and the lid to keep it from shutting. all i really want to do is listen to mp3s while im on the move, and i havent found any other way besides the notebook technique or kismac to keep my ibook running while its in my bag.
