Apologies in advance...I asked this in the art & design forum, but was not able to resolve.
I am burning a folder of jpegs from my Dell PC to a CD using Roxio direct CD format utility.
My powerbook 1GHz SD will not read the CD. It does not even show up on my desk top.
I closed the CD with the selection saying it will work in any CD ROM.
Can anyone tell me how I can read CDs burned on a PC?
Thanks!

What format did you burn the CD under? ISO 9660?

Burn the CD again either using ISO 9660 format, or a PC/Mac hybrid format...

Just looked into my CD utility...apparently the selection I chose - "save to read in any computer" - is supposed to save in ISO 9660 format

Hmm, interesting...maybe a media problem? Can you just get the .jpgs over to the Mac in another way?

A few questions:
If you right-click --> Properties on this CD under Windows, what does the file info say about the CD (size, disk format, etc) ?
Did you finalize the entire CD when burning or did you just write a single "session" and leave the CD unfinalized ? Whatever software you used to burn the CD on the PC might have the ability to recognize an "unfinalized" CD that it created. (On my mac, for example, I can "Quick Erase" a CDRW in Toast Lite but then only Toast Lite will be able to recognize it as a writeable disk .. the finder won't recognize the disk unless I did a "Full Erase" with Toast).
If you go into System Preferences --> CDs & DVDs on you mac, what are the settings for:
"When you insert a blank CD:" and
"When you insert a photo CD:"
If your mac is not mounting the CD, it could be thinking that it is still a blank CDR or a Photo CD and following the directives set by these preferences (which could be set to "Ignore" or something else that would cause it not to mount)
Do you have any third party CD mastering softwared on your mac (Toast, etc ?).

Hmm...my PB can read CD-R (PC-Formats) that contains pictures etc with no dramas. I did not use Roxio to burn it though. I used the XP to burn it. Just click and drag and then write to CD. Maybe you can try doing it and see if it works.
Haz
P.S. Also take note that it could be the CD-R cds that you are using.

First of all, they aren't CD-Rs, since you're using DirectCD. They must be CD-RWs. You did mean DirectCD?
My suggestion is, why not use Easy CD Creator? Far less compabibility problems than DirectCD (and other packet-writing software.) Sure, it's not as convenient as drag-and-drop, but you get the compatibility. XP would work too.

A cd using direct CD on a pc will not work
on a mac. I don't think there is away
around it.

YO
It's very simple get the joilet extension for OS 9, you'll have to boot into OS 9 but it has full support for the directCD format.
Enjoy!

When I got my 667 TiBook last year, just for grins (I was skeptical) I put in my backup CD-RW from my Dell XP laptop created with DirectCD to import my photos and it worked like a champ. That's how I got all my documents and whatnot transferred also. Although that was a fresh-out-of-the-box machine with 10.1, maybe things have changed. I haven't done it since.

Agreed.
edit: I was very confused for a moment, and thought the Joliet extension only helped with long filenames. My bad.

Hmm. Joliet...
I actually achieved success on Friday by using the basic Roxio CD creator on my Dell NOT the auto format utility which enables drag & drop CD copying...
Thanks All!!!
