I just figured out a really cool thing.
All you have to do is make a new folder named Trash on the desktop and then replace its icon with a trash icon of your choice. Then, whenever you need to clear items, you just drag them to the "trash" folder.
True, the icon doesn't change to indicate there is trash, but it still looks cool to have a desktop trash can. I usually hide the dock and don't use it (I tried removing the dock from starting altogether but that took away my desktop picture too).
Anyway, since I have tons of space on the computer, I just leave the "trash" folder with items in it until I decide it should be emptied. Then I just open it and hit cmd+A, then cmd+delete, then cmd+shift+delete, and wham! Trash is gone.
There are other programs I know that implement a desktop trash can, but I have found every single one of them has at least one flaw that really is annoying: they only have one icon and it's hard coded, or they are customizable but only to the developer, etc. Not to mention that these developers want $10-25 just for a desktop trash can. Come on. I hope I am not being mean here, but isn't that kind of petty to ask? It's a trash can. It's like I don't know maybe 1-2 hours worth of scripting. It's not like it's Quartz. I can't find a desktop trash can that works well and is free, but my solution above seems to be the best right now.
