We need to make open save dialog boxes redundant, the finder should be used for this.

I agree. The whole paradigm is somewhat backwards. Find your files first. When you want to open or save a file, drag and drop. It took me a while to realize this would work. Now, I find it extremely convenient.

This doesn't work very well in Windows because every dialog is like a file manager. I think if you dragged a file there, it would just be moved into the folder you are looking at.

Disagree. I don't want to have to mess around with the desktop and/or multiple windows. Finding through the Open/Save is much more efficient. It mostly happens when I realize I don't know where the file is after I try to open something through the application.

How would you use the Finder to open
or save a file

I think the OS 9 open close dialog
box was pretty cool. It lets you save
and open files very easily.

So the dialog box for Mac OS X should
really be more like that for OS 9 except
that it would also allow Column view.

Oh and it got to work properly.

I would settle for Open/Save Dialogs that works as well as in OS 9.

Here's my top reasons why the Open/Save Dialogs stinks (at least on my system).

1. When you choose "New Folder" the "Create" button appears to have focus, but when hitting the enter-key that only results in a system-beep.

2. In InDesign. When creating a new folder (at least on our servers) results in that both the newly created folder and some other folder gets highlighted. Only way to get rid of the double highlight is to choose another folder higher up and then re-enter the folder you were in.

3. In InDesign (again). When re-linking images InDesign tries to auto-find the image in the entered folder. This works but for some reason the "Choose" button is disabled. The only way to activate it is to select some other image and then re-select the image you were after in the first place. This is truly annoying.

4. At my work-place we have the same folder hierarchy at different servers (rip-servers, file-server, etc.). When saving a file (or a postscript-file) the only way to know on what server you are is to scroll back to the root. I've seen many people hit the pop-up menu with bookmarks to find this out without luck. Give us a Search Path pop-up and a separate Favourites pop-up.
