Now that OSX is working FINE for me, I'm ready to re-partion my primary drive and remove a partition I had set up for OS9...I need the drive space...what should I "save" from my current OSX partition so as to minimize the effort when I reload? I know that I'll need to copy documents, applications and "normal" stuff, but I don't want to have to re-create keychains, preferences and other obscure but necessary things....thanks for any help, advice....

I don't quite understand... why don't you just use the OS 9 partition however you want? Just use it as a second drive from within OS X. How large is your OS X boot partition?

just take your whole user folder. after you reformat the drive you can put the user folder back in that location and reinstall X. Make your user account the same name as before and it will use your existing user folder. That worked for me a couple weeks ago.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your Mac X partition to another drive and then after you erase and unpartition your drive you can use Carbon Copy Clone to clone it back to your boot drive. No reinstalling needed, should take less then 1 hour for everything.

Your Users folder, your Applications folder- then you can check after the reinstall which are Apple supplied apps and which you have installed.
Then from the root, look in Application Support for files relating to user installed apps, itemd in the Application Enhancers, items in PreferencePanes, Contextual menu folder, check in Screen Savers because some third party installers may put them there, and if there is anything in StartUpItems.
This in in addition to the Users folder and others described in the other reponses.

The most logical thing to do (without the need for repartitioning, BTW) would be to use your ex-Mac OS 9 partition (of course, if it was big enough) for your /Users folder: see Mike Bombich's tutorial for this...
