I have a large number of fonts (~700) installed on my computer and I want to go through them and archive the ones that I don't like/don't use. Is there a way to print out or view onscreen a list of all my fonts? I don't just want a list of names, but the list where you get a text sample in each font (that way I will know which fonts I don't want).
Thanks for any help!

Sure, Apple has included a script within the system to do such a task, head here:
/Library/Scripts/Info Scripts/Font Sampler.scpt
Enjoy.

It would need to be altered though, as that script has the list of fonts hard-coded at the beginning.

Edit away using Script Editor...

The script does exactly what I want, but it appears as if I would have to edit the script by typing the name of _every_ font that I have; this would take a long time. Is there some way I can tell the script to simply use all installed fonts (or all fonts in a certain directory)?

Probably not the precisely correct forum in which to post this, but what the hell. /. announced today that bitstream and GNOME have finished and posted their free font set, Bitstream Vera. You can get it here:
http://www.gnome.org/fonts/
I've been using the sans-serif for a while now, and really like it. And who can complain about free, clean fonts.
UPDATE: Thanks to Gui Banana for pointing out that I had gotten the name wrong (I had dropped the Bitstream)

I have downloaded many fonts and dropped them into my ~/Library/Fonts folder and they always work fine. I tried that with these Vera fonts and I'm not getting anything. Vera doesn't show up in any program. I restarted and still nothing. What's the deal?

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Duh, OK now I see it.... thanks! Well, it's very clean alright, but at least late at night it looks a LOT like Lucida Grande to me. I like something with a little more visual interest than just another straightforward clean font. Thanks though.

I like Bistream Vera Sans Mono a lot, but unfortunately it only looks good
a) Anti-aliased
and
b) At font sizes 12+
making it useless as a terminal font, the main point of a monospace font

So turn on antialiasing. Are you using fonts < 12 for a terminal?
I'm using the Bitstream Vera Sans Mono as my Terminal.app font and I love it! I just went to Window Setings->Display and turned on antialiasing. I view it at size 13.
I just tested it non-antialiased (at 13) and it wasn't that bad. It also wasn't that bad non-antialiased/9.

Fontage has nice UI, but it only seems to display the first 30 or so of my fonts...
