Is there a way of getting rid of the icon iChat keeps putting up in the menu bar (upper right)? I don't want it to keep coming back (I can drag if off but it returns!).

That would be fine if I could get to that. I don't have a .mac account nor an AIM screen name. So the app just quits.

Well then if it's a issue for you, go to AOL, get a free screen name and then do it, you can use something completely obscure if you're worried about maybe wanting to use the program later. You can have more than one screen name.

I don't want a screen name, nor do I want to get into the IM'ing world at this time. All I want is the icon gone. Surely Apple has made a way for the screen to not be cluttered with unnecessary icons.

The screen name is for free so if you really want that menu icon removed....why not make one? You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

Edit ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and remove this entry:

Code:
<string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/iChat.menu</string>
Once you remove that entry, save, log out, back in, and you should be all set.

Ooops. Sorry. I did read it then forgot about it.

The only other way to remove it would to be to delete the Menu extra file from Root user. It might have bad consequences.

How about entering fake information into the .mac section when opening the programme when not connected to the internet.

Someone recomended editing some plist file. That is the
same as dragging it from the menu (I like dragging menu
extras ). what I would is just search for the menu extra
and rename. End of story. If SystemUI still wants to load
it cant because it doesn't exists any more.

I know it is a hack but it will work without deleting
anything or getting a screen name.

I've been looking for a way to log in without opening the iChat application itself (ie. just the menulet would be active and logged on.) I wonder if there might be a way to do it via this plist file?
