Since installing the 10.2.5 update, I have lost the ability to send email in mail.app again. I had previously stopped using authentification on outgoing mail to work around the end of SMTP services with the 10.2 upgrade. Is it time to just dump mail.app? Does anyone have a suggestion on a good mail client for OS X as Apple's own apparently won't suffice.

I've never had a problem with Mail. Since I've set it up (and I have 3 accounts with dif settings for each) nothing has broken it. What do you mean by "the end of SMTP services with the 10.2 upgrade"?

Mail is not flawless. Neither are other clients. Mail works great for most users. But if you really want to switch, I'd propose eudora.

btw: Why do users with very low post count b*tch most...

Probably because they rarely have anything useful to say so the only reason they have to post is to b*tch.

Perhaps because I post when I am having an actual problem? I prefer not to waste people's times with posts like "Mozilla works" "Thank God for tabs in Safari"

It doesn't change the fact that when I first installed 10.2 (about a week after it was released), I could no longer access my SMTP servers, the work around then was to stop authenticating outgoing mail. As the only answer I have got here is "You must be imagining things, it works fine", I'll thank the person for the Eudora recommendation and go from there.

I just don't see how that is a Mail specific issue. If your problem is authentication with your SMTP server, a different mail client is probably not going to fix it. You could always use Sendmail, that's what I do.

Except that Mozilla mail has no problem negotiating the connection. However, I have several addresses to manage, and Mozilla's mail service doesn't make the grade. The problem, specifically, is the syntax that mail.app uses when it sends your ID to your SMTP server (the hint about shutting authentification off came from the Apple Knowledge Base and was Apple's suggested work around to the problem). Up until the release of Jaguar mail.app was my favourite mail client, since Jaguar it has become a little unreliable.

I've had sporadic problems with Eudora since 10.1 with crashes and corrupted attachments, so I'd approach with caution.
I played around with PowerMail a bit and it seemed ok, decided to try the free option of Mail.app -- so far so good for me.
GyazMail is nifty too (no IMAP yet though...).
I'd say download some demos, back up your mail and do some test driving.

Heh, I found GyazMail Saturday night, as I have several hundred emails stored in my half dozen accounts, I haven't used it for incoming yet (not until I am back on a high speed connection, anyway). But I like the interface and I have no SMTP problems with it.

Do you know what's even better? Not getting a "Password refused" error when I try to send email.
