Hey everybody,
(Note: I tried using Search, but the fact that there is a 3-character minimum means that it's a bit hard to look for "OS 9" )
Anyway, as the title implies, I want to get rid of OS 9 from my iBook. The only time that I have ever used "Classic" is when I downloaded a program, not realizing that it was made for OS 9. Otherwise, everything I have - all of my documents and what not, are all OS X native.
Before I actually do get rid of it though, are there any benefits to having OS 9 on my system that would make it stupid of me to remove it?
Thanks,
-Sage

If you've never used Classic thus far, then I can't think of any reasons why you'd need to keep it.
Just drag "System Folder" (not "System") from the root level of your HD into the Trash. Poof. You're done.

Oh, that's it? I thought that there would be more to it... (other than trashing the OS 9 system and applications folders)
Thanks!

I'd suggest keeping it installed unless you need the disk space. You never know when it might come in handy, and it doesn't do any harm other than taking up disk space.

That's one of the many amazing things about OS X; there's not an "Uninstall" operation that you hafta go through like there is in Windows...you just trash it, and you're done. Almost too good to believe!
And yeah, I'd leave it up there as well...you never know which little application may come your way in which you'll need OS 9 (Classic) to run. So unless you're starving for disc space, keep it.

Id keep it also. I have only needed to use it once since OSX public beta whent 10.0 to flash an ATI car. Even though i only used it once Its a good thing I had it.
Dam I hate 9. Check off the "Warn Before Starting Clasic" box in the Classic system prefs to keep the rabid dog from coming back to life.
And I feel your pain about the search criteria. It really sucks when you are looking for something specific that is 3 characters long.

You can send Applications (Mac OS 9) and System Folder to the trash, but there may be invisible files left on the root folder of the hard drive.

i agree with the statements above.....unless you *really* need the disk space that os 9 is using, just leave it there...you never know what may turn up later and then (like others before have) you'll back with another question - "i deleted os 9 and now i need to install it again....yada yada yada...."

A pretty decent compromise: if it annoys you to have OS 9 on your machine if you're never using it (or need the room), but you don't want to go to the hassle of reinstalling it in the event you should you need it, just burn "System Folder" and a bunch of OS 9 apps onto a CD.
Anyway, yup, that's all there is to it.

I've ditched OS 9 with the introduction of Jaguar. Wiped the drive completely and did a clean OS X install. I've not missed 9 once so far. Thank god.

No reason to delete it unless you're low on disk space. It could save your ass.

Ah, I see. Since I don't have a CD burner on my iBook, would it be feasible to just make those two folders into a disk image? More than anything, I just hate having those folders in my way.
Many thanks again!

Than here's an opposite question:
I got rid of OS 9 last year because I had little or no disk space. Now i have a 80GB external drive and tons of room.
How do I get OS 9 back on my drive?
Copying the Mac OS 9 System Folder to the hard drive in admin or root mode does nothing.
I check the classic system preferences pane and it says "you can't do this".
It won't allow booting from the cd because it deafults to Mac OS X start up or ejects the cd.
If i'm S.O.L. it's no problem. just curious.
