My mother has a relatively recent iBook (it is 600 MHz)

Apparently when it was restarting recently the power button was pressed. (Not sure if this is significant.)

Ever since it has not booted - it starts up with a blue screen and will not do anything for about three minutes - then it goes into the "I can't find a system volume" screen.

The behaviour at this screen is odd - it does not recognise the system on the HD and will not recognise a system from a CD.

It won't go into FW target mode - it won't boot from a CD - (by holding-down 'c' at boot)

It won't recognise any boot volumes (including CDs) if I boot with Option held-down

I have tried resetting the PMU - but it appeared not to do anything.

Ditto with resetting the PRAM.

Has anyone been in a similar position?

Or know how to fix it.

p.s. what is Apple's warranty position if you bought the computer on the other side of the world? i.e. not in the country that you live-in.

Thanks in advance

Did you try to boot in Open Firmware (command-option-O-F), then :

reset-nvram
reset-all

Thanks for the tip - unfortunately it didn't work.

Oh well - I suppose it's a call to Apple Care tomorrow.

Wierdly - my mother tried booting the ibook again this morning - and it booted perfectly!

It must have been having an Easter holiday...

Just to be safe, why not back everything up now and maybe reinstall sometime?
