I'm trying to burn a DVD, and when I insert a brand new, blank DVD-R, my Powerbook spits it back out without ever mounting.

The disc is an Imation DVD+R 4.7gb.

Any thoughts?

Crap! I had no idea +R was any different than -R. I just figured it was the manufacturer's way of writing it.

Is there a likelihood that a future SD firmware update will support DVD+R?

No, the UJ-815 will never record to +R. First, the hardware doesn't support it, and second, it seems Matsushita hates +R. Matsushita supports -R, -RAM, and sometimes -RW. None of their machines will record to +RW or +R (although some will play them).
