I have been intreagued by the 'piles' feature allegedly in Panther (or will Steve call it Pant Her?)... but have been unable to visualise how it would work...

Just found this on slashdot, anyone know if it will it will work anything like this?:

http://homepage.mac.com/rdas7/piles.html

If so, I am seriously sold on the idea!! Cool, cool, cool!

Peace,

Marc

I still don't get it... I think it would be an interesting concept, (sure to get a ton of "WOW" type press) but when you have 7+ documents, wouldn't things get a little crazy? What about "piles" at the top of the screen?

No offense, but the only people who will like this are hardcore Mac users. Try and explain "piles" to a Unix/Windows person and they will surely say "but, isn't that what folders are for?"

I like the idea and the look and feel, but it will just confuse the novice users.

This is another one of those 'tabs' idea that people find cool and "can't live without" but in the end is just a poorly implemented metaphor.

I'm not so sure... it depends on the implementation, which I'm sure Apple will nail.

For example, I use the desktop as the destination for all my Downloads... I download absolutely loads of stuff and it always clutters the desktop. Thing is, I may not have the time to look at them or sort them for a few days, and they remain there taking up space...

If I coud set the D/Ls to go into a 'pile' for sorting at my convenience it would be a a really valuable feature... and free up loads of space.

Same with Pics and stuff of my cameras. I could just put them in a 'picture pile' and all would be well in my world...

I realise it is an excuse for putting things off, and bad organisation, but if I could have 1 or 2 icons on the desktop and not 50+ icons, yet still have really easy access without folders and sorting things, I would be very, very happy...

I have high hopes for the feature...

Peace,

Marc

Yeah, I just hate it when people like cool stuff that is so great that they feel like they can't live without it. Especially since I didn't think of it. Glad to hear that I'm not the only jealous GUI 'expert' trolling the boards!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Thanks Marc, up to now this has been the only example I have heard where I could imagine that piles could be useful for myself.

But on the other hand I doubt that it makes sense for Apple to introduce a totally new concept of "file organization" (or better: file un-organization) which may confuse users with almost no substantial benefit for most others.
