I have used filebuddy and now cocktail to delete all the ds_store files but that just makes all the windows have their own settings.

Is there an app or command to make all folders across 5 disk drives global settings?

Also Mac OS X deletes or ignores my settings for the applications window. Upon restart it is back to the way I don't want it. I chage it and restart later and then back to the wrong way.

i have an idea, but i admit complete ignorance of .DS_store or what it does. since nobody has posted any response, i'll offer my uninformed opinion.

1) i am assuming that .DS_Store stores information on how a folder should be viewed (icon size/bg color/sort by/etc). if i'm wrong stop reading now.

the solution i would offer is to copy a .DS_Store file from a folder, set up like you want it, to other folders to see if the preference holds throughout.

also, for your problem with the Application folder. i have mine set up to icon view. however if i am in column view and hit the applications button in the toolbar, it shows up in column mode. if i'm in icon mode or list mode, it appears in icon view.

i head this tip also before. close all finder windows, and use the terminal to open the folder "open ~/Applications" and then add the settings that you want. for some reason this is supposed to make the settings stick.

As far as I can tell, adamk is correct. Of course, it's a bit tough to copy a file to every directory on your computer... if you do end up pulling this off from the Terminal, make very sure that any and all networked volumes (iDisk, SMB shares, etc.) are disconnected before you do this -- those count as directories too.

Also, a word to the wise: do not allow Mac OS 9's Finder to see any of the folders that don't have .DS_Store files in them yet. If it does, it will set the Inited bit on the folder and cause you all sorts of headaches.

It might be worthwhile to make a small application to do this sort of thing automatically, hm? Maybe I will someday...

Thanks adamk. I am trying small test and they seem to work.

I might try it system wide soon.

The finder is really picky this way.
