Hello,

I can't seem to download anything at all... in Safari, I get a message that "Can't Find File", and I tested in IE and simply got an "Error". I logged in as another user, and downloading works in that account! Do I have corrupted preferences? If so, what exactly do I need to trash? If not, what's wrong?

Thanks,
-Sage

How many different things did you try to download to confirm its for all downloads?

Also, if you can direct me toward something you were trying to download, I'll give it a try and see if it really is your system or just the file you aiming at.

Also, can you control-click (right click) an image (anyone will do) and select download to disk ? Does THAT work ?

No no no! All you have to do is unplug your computer from the wall for 5 minutes, press the power button just before your plug it back in and when it starts up hold down the d button(for download) and all should be fine.

Well, basically, I've tried downloading just about anything... files from MacUpdate and VT, Resexcellence files, Theme files, icon files, desktops... just about everything that I download!

Also, can you control-click (right click) an image (anyone will do) and select download to disk ? Does THAT work ?
Nope, already tried that... I still get a "Can't Find File" message in Safari.

Also, my machine has already been shut off and turned back on. Like I said, I can download anything from a second account that I have setup on the computer, but I can't in my admin account. So, would I be right in that it's a corrupted preference file?

FYI, I can download my mail from a POP3 server just fine.

Seriously..

Chuck out your preferences for these apps.
Check permissions on the folder you are trying to download to.
Do you have a root user account installed? Did you use it to meddle with anything? Install anythng?

If all else fails. make a new user account and Delete that user before you reinstall everything...

I'm the administrator, and I simply have it set to download to my HD (I tried setting it to my Desktop and several other folders, and that didn't work either).

I've installed themes, but haven't run into any troubles with them (and I'm not sure how they'd affect a download in any way)... also, I've run AquaFix just in case, and that didn't cause my download problem to solve itself either.

I'm still conviced that it's the preferences, but I have no clue what to delete... I have three browsers installed on my computer, and none of them can download anything, so I'm assuming it must be some "system-wide Internet preference" problem...

In the meantime, thanks again!

sambeau - Nope, Firewall's not on.

dampeoples - Would that affect the normal kind of downloading that I do though? (Sorry, I don't know much about these kinds of things...)

Well, I pretty much have it working now, but not quite right...

I deleted the com.apple.internetpref.plist and com.apple.internet.config.plist files, and now I can download stuff... but not to my HD. I can only download stuff if it's set to my Desktop. While not crucial (and at least I can d/l now! ), it would still be nice to download to my HD...

You HD? I believe you don't have write permission turned on to the root of the HD. Do you really want to clutter downloads in with system files? Stick with your Home or Desktop folder. Any higher than that is meant for apps and system files.

If you really want to make a big mess on your drive, I think Getting Info on the drive, turning on user write permission will fix it.

Download "CockTail" (from www.versiontracker.com) and use the "Restore Default Permissions" option. This should fix the (apparent) trouble you're having.

My dad had this problem on his G4 and he had installed some download accelerator pre-10.2 upgrade. The files appeared to be downloading, and they were, just not to the designated place as set by the browser. Searching for the file revealed where the download accelerator was placing them.
