1) How much RAM do you have? Have at least 512 MB... more is always recommended.

2) Make sure you get the latest update, which I believe is version 10.0.4.

This happened to me once. The cause was corrupt fonts used just by Adobe applications. Someone on Adobe's forums to me to search for and delete "AdobeFnt" files but not "AdobeFntDB". These are apparently reinstalled by the app if they are missing. Anyway, it worked. Since I am spouting this from memory, you might want to check Adobe's forums for more info.

Do a search on your hard drive for files ending in ".lst" Delete them all, then restart.

Just remembered more details. I had just downloaded my first (and last) free font . When the problems started, I trashed it. So if you have installed any new fonts lately you might consider removing them. The problems continued after this, however, and even after I re-installed Illustrator. Finally I went to the Adobe Forum and found the answer above. The AdobeFnt files do have .lst on the end. Sorry, forgot that detail.

Thanks for all the users answers.

I did what I read from the ADOBES FORUM.

this works for me:
go to: user/library/application support/Adobe/
trash: Fonts and TypeSpt folders
restart AI. Ai will restore the folders and will work

I see you have two problems:

You are using Illustrator
You are using Suitcase
Unfortunately, I am in the same boat. Welcome to the club. Both pieces of software are also pieces of something else. They are bloated, slow, and resource intensive. Yuck.

One thing to try is getting rid of the buggy Auto-Activation plug in. It has been nothing but a plague here (for that matter, any of the Auto-Activation plug-ins). For that matter, get rid of Suitcase. Anyone get the feeling that I have a strong dislike of Suitcase yet? Shall I rave on?

Hmm, on a fresh install of 10.2.5 and Illistrator 10 I have no problems.

Though I am not using any font management software.

I am actually suprised how snappy it is, since all I have heard is that its slow.

I agree, but using the same two applicationa I didn't have any problem. My problems were with Suitcase and Quark (What a nightame!!!!). Now I'm trying FontAgent Pro and I like it so far.

I think the culprit is probably illustrator and fonts.

Most GDs have way the hell far too many fonts installed on their systems. Since there really is no solution to this, I might as well just shut up about it.

Illustrator might also be the culprit because it is a slow resource-hogging app. Don't read me wrong, it's just slow. It'll get fixed with v.11 and InDesign's even more minor speed issues will get fixed with v.3.

Right now I'm waiting for my copy of Acrobat 6 to arrive.

I'm finishing a scientific poster right now in my TiPB 400/284 Mb and I do agree Illustrator X is quite snappy. No complains, those are saved for Photoshop 7...
