Hi
I tried to install Mac OS 10.1 on my father's G4 (tower, 450 Mhz, 2 HDs). The OS CDs are regular CDs bought in an Apple reseller, so it should be compatible with every Mac supported by OSX.

After a few minutes, it stops saying that there is a writing error and it asks to start the installation again. But it doesn't work either. My father told me he could'nt go back to OS 9 neither !!

He used the repair program (on the OS CD) to fix problems on the disk. The program detected problems, fixed them but that didn't change the situation.

Any idea , Tips ?

Thank you in advance

Try installing it on the other disk.

Also (and this shouldn't help at all) make sure the CD is clean. The error sounds like its a problem with the HD, but you can never be too sure.

I've had problems installing when there were fingerprints on the CD.

You might also have a defective logic board. A friend of mine could not install OS X on his iMac. OS 9 installed fine, but the OS X installer either froze or gave him an error message.

He took it in and had an Apple tech look after it. After several days of testing, it was determined that the processor was defective. They replaced the logic board and OS X installed without a hitch.

I had the same problem with a blue iBook. I solved it with purchasing the latest Jaguar package. Now it runs fine thoug I suspect that the computer has hardware problems.
I've never encounterd a bug in an iron-bar.

Try reformatting the HD and then re-installing from scratch.

I am afraid that something like that happens. The only time I had such a problem was because of defective hardware. Generally, installation fail is a bad sign.

I am afraid the problem is getting worse and worse. he tried to install Mac OS X on the second drive, and it refused it as well.

My father ran a utility program (don't know which one but it took hours to complete), then re-installed Mac OS 9 ... and boom. It freezes with a nice little bomb (strange for an X user) with the message "trap not implemented. Start with extensions off".

Now what does that mean ? Thank you all for your kind replies

When you reboot using the OS X CD as the startup disk, you cansellect Disk Utility from the menu before you begin the actual installation preocess. Try re-formatting the HD and then check the disk with the Verify or Repair botton.

I' sure you know that holding down the C key after the chime when restarting will make your Mac boot off of the CD.

Did you try reformatting the hard drive yet? Try that first. If it doesn't work then you know it is hardware related.

Check your RAM chips. Are they still installed tightly?

Unimplmented trap means that there is error checking in the install process that is not working as designed.

Uh yes I know he added a lot of RAM and that second internal HD ... but he never experienced problem before.

I'll tell him to take the added RAM away during the installation ...

I'll keep you posted
