is there something in the Finder that auto aligns the files like Window's "Align to Grid" thingy?

Command-J (view options)

There's a checkbox for snap to grid.

For temporary clean up, choose view->cleanup

in the command-j options make sure to select this window only (if you want to of course) and not all windows (unless you want to)
