I've found some divx files that have an audio encoding of mpga. VLC can play them okay but I prefer QT. QT doesn't recognize this audio format. How can I convert the audio to mp3 or something so I can play it in QT? Thanks.

You could use mencoder, which comes with mplayer. Something along the lines of:
"mencoder -o convertedfile.avi -vo copy -ao mp3lame filetoconvert.avi" should do the trick.

Is there a GUI for this type of operation? Maybe a QT codec that can read mpga?

Yea, I just tried DiVX Doctor... that seems to convert the sound to mp3. Excellent.

Actually, the sound was MP3 all the time, only it was VBR MP3, and that's not really allowed in AVIs. Quicktime couldn't figure out what it was and wrote mpga - for MPEG Audio, MP3 is MPEG 1 Audio LAyer 3 - as a general designation. VBR MP3 is quite OK in MOVs, so QuickTime can read it now.

Play them with VLC. There is also a VMA codec for QuickTime for Classic here:
